Large swaths of Northeast Texas are under severe thunderstorm warnings and watches Sunday morning, as damaging winds and tornadoes are expected in the region.

The low pressure system, coupled with moisture and instability in the atmosphere, will bring heavy rain and thunderstorms to the Gulf Coast states, the National Weather Service (NWS) said in its forecast on Sunday.

This comes after meteorologists warned that a powerful atmospheric storm that caused severe impacts on California last week will continue to move east, bringing a wintry mix of rain to the western states.

“Some severe weather is expected, which will include fears of strong, damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes,” she added. Eastern areas from Texas to Alabama are expected to be the most likely areas to be affected on Sunday before the front moves into the rest of the Southeast on Monday. .

“Now seek shelter inside a sturdy structure and stay away from windows!” He urged.

In addition to the severe weather threat, the NWS said heavy rain is expected across the Mid-South and Southeast — perhaps enough to “create at least an isolated threat of flash flooding as any areas of rain and thunderstorms fall over the same area.”

Meanwhile, a “major” winter storm is expected to move across the southern Plains on Sunday, bringing heavy snowfall across parts of the southern Rockies and high plains. Additional snow accumulations of up to a foot are possible in parts of the Texas area.

The state of California was exposed to areas of flooding and mudslides, which led to trapped residents clinging to trees. The Associated Press reported that there were at least 20 storm-related deaths in the state.

The floods prompted California Governor Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency in several counties in Southern California on Sunday.

Atmospheric rivers are narrow channels in the atmosphere that can carry a large amount of moisture with them. They form when cold air from the Arctic meets warm, moist air from the tropics, cooling it to form heavy rain.
