A whirlwind start to Thanksgiving week

A whirlwind start to Thanksgiving week

What is the forecast for Monday?

Wet weather is on the cards for Monday across the Green Country.

Scattered showers and storms are possible, especially in the morning hours, as a low pressure area spins its way across eastern Oklahoma. Severe weather threats are very low, but some morning storms could produce some bursts of hail up to a quarter in size. By the afternoon hours, we will primarily be dealing with some light shower activity, although some additional strong storms may develop briefly again especially in southeastern Oklahoma.

Afternoon temperatures across northeastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas will remain in the 50s on the back side of that area of low pressure. Southeastern Oklahoma will remain on the “warmer” side of the system during the day, and with the occasional sunrise possible, our southeastern Oklahoma counties will be noticeably warmer in the 60s.

As a low pressure system slides eastward Monday night, conditions across the Green Country will turn stormy with northerly winds picking up. Wind speeds are expected to exceed 30 mph Monday night into Tuesday morning, with temperatures struggling to rise above the lower 50s Tuesday afternoon.

Of course, all eyes are on the Thanksgiving weather later this week! If you’re staying home here in the Green Country, Thanksgiving temperatures are expected to be very close to normal for this time of year. This would bring us lows in the 30s and highs in the mid to upper 50s for Thanksgiving. We’ll be watching for a very slight chance of rain late on Thanksgiving Day, but for now it doesn’t look like that might ruin any outdoor plans for the holiday! Just after Thanksgiving, another cold front is on the horizon that could bring colder air southward through the weekend.

Rain schedule 11/20/2023

If you’re traveling later this week, some messy weather is likely Wednesday morning across the Northeastern United States. But aside from that, the weather doesn’t look like it’s going to cause much of a headache on Wednesday at most major airport hubs across the country. Thanksgiving Thursday could bring some wet and stormy weather to the Gulf Coasts of Texas and Louisiana and some snow to the northern Rockies, but otherwise the rest of the country should be in pretty good shape for Thanksgiving travel conditions. will keep you posted!

Hope you have a great Monday, Green Country! You can follow me on

How do I prepare my home for freezing?

The City of Tulsa says it’s important to protect your pipes from the cold.

Officials recommend protecting outdoor pipes by disconnecting garden hoses from your home and installing covers on outdoor faucets.

Also, if the sink is along the exterior wall of your home, allow a little water to flow and open the cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate.

The National Weather Service says that when temperatures drop to 28 degrees Fahrenheit or below for a few hours, you should bring pets inside, protect sensitive plants, protect outdoor pipes, allow indoor faucets to drip and turn off automatic sprinklers.

Space Heater Safety Tips (via CBS News)

  1. If you use a heater, make sure it is not too close to things that can burn such as upholstered furniture, clothing, a mattress or bedding.
  2. Never connect a space heater to an extension cord, always plug it directly into a wall outlet.
  3. Remember to turn it off before leaving the room or going to bed. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Look for signs of malfunction, especially on older models.
  4. Make sure it has an auto shut off function.
  5. Make sure you have smoke detectors that operate with new batteries. Change the battery twice a year.

On average, fires caused by portable heaters cause 65 deaths and 150 injuries annually, according to the US Fire Administration.

Through Sunday night, firefighters battled several house fires throughout Tulsa as temperatures dropped below freezing.
