A Winter Storm Warning for Summit County from Thursday night into Saturday

The big one is coming.

Northern Ohio has weathered the brunt of winter storms so far this winter, but meteorologists say our luck appears to have run out.

The winter storm warning begins Thursday evening

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Medina, Summit, Lorain, Cuyahoga, Erie and Huron counties from 11 p.m. Thursday until 4 a.m. Saturday.

How much snow will Akron get?

Heavy snow is expected to fall anywhere from 5 to 9 inches across the region.

“Travel may be very difficult,” the weather service warned. “Hazardous conditions could affect mobility in the morning and evening (Friday).”

Widespread snow will begin falling Thursday night and eventually transition to lake-effect enhanced snow Friday afternoon.

What would the cold wind look like?

Winds will also be an issue with gusts up to 30 mph.

Temperatures are expected to reach between 5 to 15 degrees below zero.

“If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your car in case of an emergency,” the weather service advises.

Winter weather warning for other northern Ohio counties

Other northern Ohio counties, including Portage, Stark, Wayne, Ashland and Richland counties, are under a winter weather warning with 3 to 6 inches of snow possible.

Akron Warming Centers

To help residents adapt to the cold temperatures, Akron plans to provide places for residents to keep warm.

The Summit Lake Community Center, located at 380 W. Crosier St., is open. As a warming center from 8am to 7pm until Friday along with other community centers in the city. The overnight emergency shelter will be located at 111 East Voris St. Open from 7pm to 8am until Monday.

Thursday: A slight chance of snow showers before 9 a.m., then a chance of snow showers after 11 a.m. Cloudy, with a high around 27. Southwest wind 9 to 11 mph. The probability of rain is 30 percent. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than half an inch is possible.

Thursday night: Snow, mainly after 11 p.m., low around 21. South wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. The chance of rain is 100 percent. Possibility of snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches.

Friday: Snow falls before noon, then snow falls in the afternoon. High is approaching 26. Light northwesterly winds, intensifying from 8 to 13 knots in the morning. The chance of rain is 100 percent. Possibility of 2 to 4 inches of new snow accumulation.

Friday night: Snow showers are possible, especially before 1 a.m. Cloudy, with a low around 8. Wind chill values ​​reaching -3. Winds are westerly 11 to 14 knots. The probability of rain is 70 percent. Possibility of new snow accumulation of less than an inch.

Saturday: A chance of snow showers, especially before 1 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 16. West wind 11 to 15 miles per hour. The probability of rain is 30 percent. Possibility of new snow accumulation of less than half an inch.

Saturday night: A chance of snow showers, especially before 1 a.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 12. A 40 percent chance of rain. Possibility of new snow accumulation of less than half an inch.
