Hurricane Lee begins to approach New England
Hurricane Lee has sparked warnings in New England as the storm begins a journey that will put it in Atlantic Canada by the end of this week. Hurricane and tropical storm watches have been issued from Massachusetts to Maine. While it appears that landfall will occur in Canada, Lee is a large storm that will impact places far from its center, with strong winds, heavy rain, rip currents and coastal flooding.

Atlantic remains active
Hurricane Lee is just one of a few systems being tracked in the crowded Atlantic Ocean this week. Tropical Storm Margot is expected to weaken as it moves across open waters this weekend. Meanwhile, Invest 97L could soon become a tropical depression or even Tropical Storm Nigel. Another potential tropical disturbance that is expected to move out of Africa next week is also being tracked.
A strong El Niño phenomenon is expected in the winter
Forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) say El Niño will almost certainly continue through the winter, with a strong possibility that it will be strong. This type of pattern typically means warmer, drier winters across the northern tier of the country and cooler, wetter winters in the southern United States.
El Nino causes the Pacific jet stream to move southward and spread eastward. During the winter, this results in wetter than normal conditions in the southern states and warmer, drier conditions in the north. (NOAA)
