Bam Adebayo hits the 3 buzzer to lead Heat to lead Pistons 104-101

DETROIT (AP) — Bam Adebayo hit a 3-pointer in the 10th minute as the Miami Heat beat the Detroit Pistons 104-101 on Sunday.

Cade Cunningham missed a 3-pointer for Detroit with 9 seconds left and Terry Rozier raced down the court with a rebound. He couldn’t get to the basket, so he tossed the ball to Adebayo, who hit his 12th 3-pointer of his seven-year career.

“Sometimes there’s karma in this game,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “Bam was great for us, especially defensively, with all the things he did and all the shots he put on goal. Sometimes the ball just happened to find this guy.

A week ago, Adebayo was a career-high 11.8% three-point shooter. He’s gone 3-for-3 in his last three games, including a 30-footer from the top of the arc on Sunday.

“I saw this was his fourth of the season, but that’s basketball,” said Evan Fournier, who scored a season-high 18 points for Detroit.

Duncan Robinson scored a season-high 30 points for Miami on 10-for-15 shooting. Adebayo had 20 points and 17 rebounds as the Heat beat the Pistons for the second time in three days.

Robinson made his 1,000th 3-pointer in the first quarter. He reached that mark in 343 games, breaking the NBA record of 350 games held by Buddy Hield.

Cunningham had 17 points and nine assists, but went 1-for-6 from beyond the arc.

The Pistons honored the 2004 NBA Championship team at halftime, and one star had encouraging words for a fanbase that hasn’t seen a playoff win since 2008, or a 30-win season since 2018.

“They’ll be fine,” said Chauncey Billups, Portland Trail Blazers coach and 2004 Finals MVP. “It just takes time.”

Miami played without Jimmy Butler, forcing Spoelstra to use his 32nd starting lineup of the season.

“When you don’t have Jimmy and you don’t have Tyler (Herro), you have to maximize your next best actions,” he said. “Bam will always be involved, but Duncan hits in every aspect of the game offensively.”

Robinson converted a four-point play with two o’clock left to give Miami a 101-96 lead. Isaiah Stewart’s 3-pointer cut the deficit to two, and Adebayo was ruled to have his answer come just after the shot clock.

Cunningham’s layup tied the game, and Robinson turned it over to give Detroit a chance at its first lead of the game.

As the shot clock expired, Cunningham hit the 3-pointer earlier than expected.

“It might have been a little long, but if he shot the ball, no one would say a word,” Pistons coach Monty Williams said. “I wouldn’t do business with anyone over that kind of takeover.”

Miami led 90-85 with 6:33 left, thanks to a possession when Adebayo fouled out and grabbed three offensive rebounds before scoring the final goal. But Fournier responded with his fourth 3 and Jalen Duren tied the game from the free throw line.

The Heat led 60-50 at halftime and increased the margin to 73-56 on Haywood Highsmith’s jump hook midway through the quarter.
