Short cold shot
A cold front will move south across the Finger Lakes today, bringing a little rain and gusty winds.
This morning, ahead of the front, temperatures are well above average morning lows, which range through the 50s. There will even be some breaks in the clouds well before the front, although the clouds will increase steadily through the early and mid-morning hours.
This front will not bring heavy rain, and what falls should be fairly light. Rain will begin to develop and move in during the late morning and continue intermittently the rest of the day and into the evening.
Temperatures overall won’t get much warmer than they are this morning, although they may rise a few degrees. The valleys between Corning and Binghamton will have more time to warm up and may creep into the upper 50s or even near 60 degrees by midday.
The winds will shift to the northwesterly and their speed will increase to 10-15 knots as the front passes. Wind gusts of 30 to 35 mph will be common, although some localized gusts up to 40 mph are possible.
Temperatures will slowly drop this afternoon, with most places outside of the Southern Tier valleys mentioned above falling to or below 50 degrees by 4 p.m. The temperature will drop faster after sunset, with 30 degrees showing up by 9 p.m.
Overnight lows will reach the upper 20s and low 30s. Some areas of rain will be possible, which could create some soft spots on roads and sidewalks as temperatures drop below freezing.
As for Wednesday, it will witness a light northerly flow that keeps temperatures cool. Most areas will reach around 40 degrees. Once again, the Southern Tier valleys will be a bit warmer with highs in the mid 40s.
There may be a little sun early Wednesday, but clouds will increase quickly during the morning hours before the next weather system. This system will spread some rain towards our area in the late afternoon and evening.
Some of this may start out as snow or mixed rain, but should turn to rain before long. Locally heavy rain is likely. Then temperatures will rise back into the 40s overnight.

Calm weather late in the week and weekend
Thursday will see some scattered showers, but by no means should that wipe out the day.
Temperatures will also make another big swing, but this time back in the warm direction. Afternoon highs should reach the 50s.
Clouds and possibly early rain on Friday should give way to some sunshine in the afternoon hours. It won’t be as warm as Thursday, but not as cold as Wednesday. Look for highs mostly in the mid to upper 40s.
Temperatures will stabilize over the weekend, with daily highs remaining in the mid 40s Saturday into Tuesday next week. Morning minimum temperatures generally range between 30-35 degrees.
Rain is generally not expected this weekend, although stray rain cannot be completely ruled out. Likewise, some glimpses of sun may be possible, but for the most part, it will just be cloudy.
Temperatures will begin to rise mid-next week and could return to the 50s. Some showers may also enter the picture.
Mild conditions are favored through next weekend, although there is still a significant amount of spread over the models.
