Exactly when London will be hit by thunderstorms and heavy rain this week
It’s shaping up to be a miserable couple of days for the capital as we’re set to experience thunderstorms. According to the Met Office, today (September 17) and tomorrow (September 18) are set to experience gloomy weather as a yellow weather warning has been issued.
This means there is a small chance of disturbances due to “severe” thunderstorms. Some homes could quickly be submerged, which could also wreck train lines, halting transportation. The Met Office also said half a month’s worth of rain could fall within an hour in parts of the UK in the coming days.
It can even lead to power outages and flooding. The upcoming weather forecast for London can be found below. MyLondon has compiled hour-by-hour weather forecasts so you can be sure you know the exact time to pack your umbrella.

London weather
Today (September 17) will be “a mix of clouds and sunny spells this morning, feeling fairly warm, before becoming cloudy later.” Heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely in some places during the afternoon. Maximum temperature 22°C.
Tonight will witness the risk of heavy rain and thunderstorms at times, and it will continue this evening and night. Fairly mild, with areas of low cloud but also some clearer periods. Minimum temperature 15°C.
Tomorrow (September 18) will be miserable too. More heavy rain and possibly thunderstorms are expected tomorrow, but also some spells of warm sunshine, especially later in the afternoon. Windy at times. Maximum temperature 21°C.
Hour-by-hour storm forecasts
Tonight (September 17) will see thunderstorms strike at 10pm and continue until midnight, when there is a 60 per cent chance of rain across the capital, although temperatures will still remain high at around 19 and 20 degrees Celsius.
The weather will remain cloudy until the early hours before rain begins again at 9am tomorrow morning (September 18) with a 40 per cent chance of rain. Heavy rain will be coupled with sunshine through the clouds but will remain in place until 5 p.m.
According to the Meteorological Office, five o’clock tomorrow evening will mark the end of the rainy weather, and the evening will witness a significant drop in temperatures compared to tonight, as night temperatures will reach about 14 degrees Celsius.
The longer forecast for next week from the Met Office indicates more thundery conditions, they say on their website: “Clouds above Tuesday morning, with rain and stronger winds later. Heavy rain at times on Wednesday, especially during the post- “Noon. Widespread rain.” On Thursday, it will be heavy and thundery in some places.”
In some parts of southern England, 30 to 40 mm of rain is expected to fall, which is equivalent to at least half the September average of 55 to 60 mm.
Jonathan Vautrey, a meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “There is a potential for these thunderstorms to become severe” and bring “gusty winds with very heavy rainfall”.
They will move relatively quickly, making it difficult to pinpoint exactly where the hardest-hit places are, Vautrey said.
“It’s definitely worth keeping up with expectations,” he added.
“Although the warning area covers the whole of south-east England, not everywhere in that area may see the most severe thunderstorms.
“It’s a good idea to check these things right away before setting off on your trip so you’re aware of where the most severe thunderstorms could occur.
“Make sure to be careful because the weather can change in very short periods of time, and be prepared for those gusty winds and possible large hail storms.”
Conditions are expected to remain “blissy at times” early next week but are likely to be more active.
