Floods and high winds hit Florida as the Atlantic watched turmoil

More than 100,000 are without power in South Florida due to high winds, flooding and rain hitting the Miami area.

Heavy rain and strong winds battered much of Florida on Wednesday, simulating tropical storm-like conditions and leading to flash flooding and power outages for thousands. The rain and winds will not stop until Thursday.

The dangerous winds prompted the National Weather Service to issue a high wind warning for coastal Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties until 1 p.m. EST. According to PowerOutage.us, about 125,000 people were without power in South Florida Thursday morning.

Some areas are likely to receive more than a foot of rain by Friday, computer forecast models showed, which could add to the already record rainfall levels the Sunshine State has seen this year. South Florida has been hit with so much rain that Fort Lauderdale has become the wettest city in America, with more than 100 inches of rain this year and counting.

Hurricane Headquarters: Invest 98L was monitored in the Caribbean with a possible tropical development near Florida

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) says the 98L investment in the Caribbean Sea has a moderate chance of development.

“Regardless of developments, this system is expected to bring heavy rains that could lead to flash floods and mudslides on parts of the Caribbean coast of Central America and the Greater Antilles during this weekend,” National Center of Meteorology meteorologists said.

Meanwhile, off the southeastern coast of the United States, a non-tropical low pressure area is being monitored near Florida. The system will continue to bring showers to the Sunshine State before moving quickly across the Bahamas and reaching the northeast coast this weekend.
