Fortnite map changes and what's new on the island

The changes made to the Fortnite map for the current season may not be as big as the changes made at the start of a new chapter or OG event, but there are still some interesting additions to consider. This is in keeping with the Myths & Mortals theme for Season 2, so expect to see ancient Greek architecture and mythological settings featured in Fortnite. There's also the exciting addition of underground bunkers, after years of suspense and unexplained openings popping up all over the island. If you want to keep up to date, here are the major changes to the Fortnite map in Season 2, Chapter 5.

As you can see from the full Fortnite map above, not much has changed since the previous season and a lot of existing points of interest have remained intact. The two biggest changes occur in the Northwest and Southeast, where the landscape has been updated in keeping with the Myths & Mortals theme for Season 2. This included expanding the island somewhat to include the new Underworld area, while some of the snow was melted to reveal a brighter area underneath.

The underworld and the gloomy portal

To the northwest of the Fortnite map, the island has descended into the underworld and taken on a dark appearance. If you touch the green “water” in this area, you'll get three Underworld Dash charges, which you can use to zoom a short distance quickly. There are two Olympian legends here – Hades in The Underworld and Cerberus in the Grim Gate – and if you summon them, defeat either of them, you can obtain the Fortnite aspect of the gods.

In the southeast of the Fortnite map, the snow has melted, revealing a sunny area filled with ancient Greek buildings and statues. There are two other Olympian legends here – Zeus on Mount Olympus and Ares on the Brawler Battlefield – and they can be fought and defeated again for their own skin.

Restored reels

As the name suggests, Ruined Reels have now been fixed to the center of the Fortnite map, so you can now enjoy the restored reels in all their glory. If you look nearby, you can also see the remains of the Titan's Arm and Pandora's Box in the river, which appeared during the recent Fortnite live event at the end of Season 1. You'll need to head here to complete the Fortnite Agility test as part of the Snapshot quests, and they'll likely feature more as the current season continues.

Other changes to the Fortnite map

There are many other new features about this season's Fortnite map that you should track down and investigate. There are a number of Fortnite Scrying Pools throughout the island, which you can interact with to speak to the gods and will help you progress through Snapshot's story missions. There are also a lot of Fortnite weapon caches that will only unlock a few Storm Circles per match, which contain high-level weapons and a Fortnite weapon mod bench to make further improvements to your guns.
