summary
A cold front approaching from the northwest will shift winds to the south today, and breezy conditions are expected to develop tonight and continue through Sunday. Somewhat dry conditions will prevail today, with increasing rain tonight and Sunday ahead of the front, with a thunderstorm possible Sunday on Kauai. The front will push into the central islands and stop Sunday and Monday night, bringing with it some rainy weather and shifting northeasterly winds. The front will dissipate Monday night, with light to moderate trading and fairly typical trade wind weather expected Tuesday through the end of the work week.
discussion
Currently, a 1,021 mb front is centered at the surface about 1,250 miles northeast of Honolulu, while the cold front is located about 800 miles west-northwest of Kauai. Trade winds will calm, with winds turning to light to moderate southeasterly winds early this morning. Infrared satellite images show clear to partly cloudy conditions in most areas, with a bit more cloud cover on the east- and southeast-facing slopes of Kauai and the Big Island where radar images also show a few showers. The main focus in the short term is on the incoming front and the associated weather it will bring to the islands.
The latest model solutions continue to show some differences, but the overall trend has been less eastward advance of the front in the island chain. This trend is reflected in the latest forecasts, which are roughly a combination of previous forecasts and the latest GFS and ECMWF solutions.
As a result, we expect the approaching front to shift to southerly winds today, and winds to become southerly and southwesterly active tonight and Sunday. The front will push into the Western Islands late Sunday, then stall near the Central Islands Sunday and Monday night, with moderate northerly to northeasterly winds expected after the front passes. The front will dissipate Monday night, with a weak ridge north of the state keeping trading light to moderate on Tuesday through the end of the work week.
As for the rest of the weather details, somewhat dry weather prevails today with limited rain activity across the state. Increasing south-southwest flow will bring increased precipitation to leeward areas of the smaller islands tonight and Sunday as the front approaches from the northwest, with the wettest conditions on Kauai and Oahu. In fact, there may be enough instability for some heavy rain and some thunderstorms along the front over Kauai on and before Sunday. It looks like a more unstable air mass will rise northeast of the islands by Sunday night, but we will continue to monitor that closely. The front and associated band of moisture will push into the central islands and hold off Sunday and Monday night, bringing with it some rainy weather. Meanwhile, deeper moisture associated with the front will remain north of the Big Island, so fairly dry weather will prevail here. In fact, if trends continue, further downward adjustments to precipitation chances in Maui County may be needed.
The front appears to dissipate Monday night, with a combination of residual moisture and moisture flow from the southeast bringing back a more typical trade wind pattern characterized mainly by windward and mocha showers that should continue through the end of the week.
airline
High pressure far northeast of the islands will continue to drift eastward today, as a frontal system approaches the state from the northwest. Light winds will blow southeasterly this morning ahead of this feature, then veer southerly in the late afternoon or evening.
Relatively dry air will suppress shower activity through this morning. However, scattered rain is expected to fall over the islands and adjacent waters later today.
Southerly winds will become a breeze tonight as the front approaches, bringing frequent showers to Kauai.
There are no AIRMETS currently in effect.
Navy
The latest ASCAT pass shows that winds have fallen back to a moderate to fresh range and will continue to ease today, so the Small Boat Warning has been cancelled. The approaching front will shift winds from the south to the southeast today. Winds will then strengthen slightly to moderate to locally strong ranges from the south to southwest late tonight into Sunday, especially for the western half of the state. The cold front will move through the island chain Sunday afternoon into early next week bringing several showers and winds from the north and northeast in the moderate to fresh or perhaps slightly stronger range behind the front.
The high surf warning has been canceled for east-facing beaches as conditions fell below advisory levels. The latest observations show that the northeast swell decreased by about a foot overnight. This trend is expected to continue through the day which will translate into a rapid decrease in waves along east-facing beaches.
A combination of the prolonged northwest swell and the faint northeast swell mentioned above will provide a slight boost to west-facing beaches today and tomorrow and allow surf on the north-facing beach to land more steadily today through Sunday. A large, medium-period north-northwest wave (340-350°) is expected to arrive late Sunday, peaking above the warning threshold on Monday. This swell will continue as it moves to a more northerly direction on Tuesday, before slowly tapering off Wednesday into Thursday. In the long-range forecast, a larger swell may develop to the northwest late next week with wave heights likely to exceed warning levels along north-facing beaches.
The off-season southerly swell will continue to build today, peaking tonight through Sunday near the summer average, before tapering off early next week.
