Ice and snow move across southeast Michigan on Monday
(CBS Detroit) – Winter weather is about to take over lower Michigan. This wintry weather arrives later today and continues throughout the day tomorrow.
Let’s start by saying that these forecasts are all based on temperature. Temperatures determine the type of precipitation we receive. Temperatures will rise today throughout the day. We’re sitting in the teens this morning with our temperatures and will see the thermometer climb into the lower 30s by late evening.
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Southeast Michigan and will go into effect at 7pm this evening and extended until 4pm tomorrow to account for this winter weather.
At lunchtime snow showers are expected. Snow will be scattered throughout the afternoon and early evening. As temperatures warm enough this evening, we will see a shift from snow to sleet and freezing rain.
The threat of freezing rain and freezing rain will increase in severity overnight into tomorrow morning.
Tomorrow late morning we will have a change from freezing rain to rain. Anywhere north of M-59, this will primarily be a snow event where we will see the highest snowfall accumulations.
Speaking of backlogs, here’s the breakdown:
Ice accumulations will be highest south of I-696. At the moment 0.01 to 0.25 inches seems likely.
The main risks associated with this amount of ice accumulation in the forecast will be power outages and ice on your vehicle and slick roads.
Snowfall accumulations will be greatest north of I-69; Even then, only 2 to 4 inches will be possible.
Motorists should expect some ice on the roads starting late tonight and certainly tomorrow, which could slow down your commute. We’ll cover your next drive, so you’re prepared.
On the bright side, we expect to see high temperatures exceeding 40 degrees this weekend. However, it comes with more rain.
