The phrase “It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity” may be on the minds of more than a few Hoosiers as dangerously high temperatures creep across central Indiana this week. Meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis say the heat index on Thursday could reach 115 degrees.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, Indianapolis broke a dew point record that had not been seen in 13 years.

Dangerous heat hits Indiana this week: What you should know about forecasts
“It’s not often in Indianapolis that we see these high dew points,” said Andrew White, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. “In fact, it’s only happened three times since 2000. It’s hard to get that much humidity, especially in the Indianapolis area. We tend to be a little drier.”
What is dew point?
White explains that dew point is a measure of the amount of moisture present in the atmosphere, while humidity is a combination of dew point and temperature. Thursday’s record-breaking dew point is contributing to the high temperatures in central Indiana with heat indexes ranging from 105 to 115 degrees, White said.
While Thursday could be the hottest all summer, according to the NWS, relief is on the horizon.
“The warm temperatures and humid conditions will continue into tomorrow, but fortunately this weekend we expect things to start to cool down,” White said.
