Ireland’s storm timeline as Met Eireann updates weather warnings amid threat from previous cyclones

Ireland is bracing for stormy weather within hours, with two former cyclones threatening to bring heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds.

The remnants of Hurricane Lee, which made landfall in Canada on Saturday and has since been classified as a post-tropical cyclone, is expected to impact the weather in Ireland tonight and tomorrow.




Ireland could next feel the effects of former Cyclone Nigel this weekend, but its exact path is still being monitored.

Met Eireann has issued multiple weather warnings in recent days, which have been updated this morning to reflect the upcoming weather conditions.

In total, 15 counties were affected by four status yellow warnings for both wind and rain.

Speaking about the weather for tonight and tomorrow, the national forecaster said: “Tuesday is wet and windy, with fresh to strong and gusty southwesterly winds, although there will be drier and sunnier spells at times this afternoon (best in the south) . The winds will become very strong in the western coastal areas this evening, and rain and drizzle will become heavy at times there as well. The highest temperatures are from 15°C to 19°C.

“It will be rainy and windy tonight, with fresh to strong and gusty southwesterly winds, which will be very strong in the west, south and southeast. Rain will continue in most areas throughout the night and will be heavy at times, with the possibility of thunder as well. This may cause local flooding. The rain will turn To scattered showers in the west by morning. Lowest temperatures range from 10 degrees Celsius to 14 degrees Celsius.

“Rain will fall from the east on Wednesday morning, but for the remainder of the day there will be sunny spells and widespread rain, some heavy, with the possibility of intermittent thunder. In the morning, the weather will be stormy, with very strong southwesterly to westerly winds in the northwest. The winds gradually calm down during the day, becoming light to moderate in the evening. The highest temperatures range from 12°C to 16°C, and the mildest temperatures are in the southeast.

“Clear spells and scattered rain on Wednesday night, but most places will become dry overnight. Minimum temperatures range between 6 and 9 degrees Celsius, and winds are southerly to southwesterly, light to moderate.

5 pm Tuesday – A yellow wind warning begins for west Galway and Kerry and continues until 5am on Wednesday

It read: “South to southwest winds will be very strong and gusty.” Possible impacts: Possibility of fallen branches/trees and debris flying around, difficult driving conditions.

5 pm Tuesday – A yellow rain warning begins for Cavan, Donegal, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo and continues until 6am on Wednesday.

The text of the message stated: “Rainfalls are heavy and sometimes continuous, especially on highlands and mountains. Potential impacts: localized flooding, travel disruption.

11.59 pm Tuesday – A yellow wind warning begins for Cork, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow and continues until 6am on Wednesday.

It read: “South to southwest winds will be very strong and gusty.” Possible impacts: Possibility of fallen branches/trees and debris flying around, difficult driving conditions.

6 am Wednesday – A yellow wind warning begins for Donegal and Mayo and continues until 3pm on Wednesday.
