Light rain fell amid the thunder in East Rutherford at 6:11 p.m., according to Weather.com. The match is scheduled to kick off at 8:20 p.m., and rain is expected until kick-off time.

A flood warning was issued Monday for New Jersey’s five northeastern counties due to the potential for heavy rain. The National Weather Service said the watch began at 11 a.m. and ends at midnight in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union counties.

Between 1 and 3 inches of rain could fall over a short period of time, causing flooding near rivers, streams and other low-lying, flood-prone locations, the weather service said. It can also flood urban areas and areas with poor sanitation, and may clog storm drains or ditches.

Update (5 p.m.): Flash flood warning – more urgent than flood watch – It has been issued for northwest Bergen County, effective from 4:25 PM to 7:30 PM because thunderstorms dumped heavy rain on the area. The New York Weather Service’s regional office said 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain had already fallen within an hour, and up to an additional inch of rain was possible.

Some of the showers and thunderstorms developing today will move slowly and could drop 1 to 3 inches of rain within an hour, increasing the risk of rain, meteorologists with the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center said. Flash flooding in parts of the mid-Atlantic region, including New Jersey.
