Today tonight:
Scattered showers and thunderstorms will gradually end over the southern plains and rolling plains this morning. It will be mostly cloudy in the morning, then sunny to partly cloudy by midday and into the afternoon. High temperatures will range from the mid 70s to very low 80s. Winds will be easterly at a speed of 5-15 knots per hour, with gusts sometimes reaching 20 knots per hour. The chance of rain is 60 percent in the morning.

More rain and thunderstorms are expected this evening and tonight. Some storms can be strong to severe. The evening starts out partly cloudy, then gradually turns to partly cloudy. Low temperatures will range from the mid 50s to mid 60s. The winds will be east-northeasterly, at a speed of 5 to 15 knots. The chance of rain is 60 percent.

Update: The Southern Plains Storm Prediction Center is at a “mild” (Level 2 of 5) and “Marginal” (Level 1 of 5) severe weather threat. The Rolling Plains area also has a “marginal” risk of severe weather. The time frame is from Friday evening until early Saturday morning. Threats include hailstones up to 1.75 inches in diameter (golf ball), and wind gusts of 60-70 mph. The tornado threat is low but not zero.

It will be a partly sunny day With highs in the mid 70s to very low 80s. Winds will be northeasterly at a speed of 5-15 knots per hour. The chance of rain is 30 percent.

Expanded forecasts:
Chances of rain and thunderstorms will continue on Friday and Saturday. We will have a break from the thunderstorm chances on Sunday. However, scattered thunderstorm chances will return daily Monday through Thursday. Below average temperatures will continue until Sunday. Temperatures will return to higher than normal next week.
High temperatures on Friday and Saturday will range between the mid 70s and very low 80s. We’ll start to warm up again on Sunday with highs ranging from the upper 70s to mid 80s. We’ll be warmer on Monday with highs in the mid 80s. Mid 80s to 90s are the highs expected Tuesday through Thursday.
Mid 50s to mid 60s are morning lows expected Saturday morning. They are expected to be in the mid-50s to lower 60s Sunday and Monday morning. Low temperatures Tuesday through Thursday morning will range from the upper 50s to middle 60s.

Drought update:
Drought conditions continue to increase across the Southern Plains and Rolling Plains, according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor update released Thursday, September 14.
Abnormal drought (D0) to extreme (D2) conditions exist throughout the southern plains and rolling plains. The Lubbock metro area remains classified in severe drought conditions (D2) and moderate drought conditions (D1) as of Thursday’s update.
