Today tonight:
More rain and thunderstorms are expected today across the Southern Plains and Rolling Plains. Some strong to severe storms may occur later this afternoon. Otherwise, the weather will be mostly cloudy to cloudy with a slight rise in temperatures. High temperatures range from the upper 60s to middle 70s. The wind will be southeasterly, at a speed of 5 to 15 knots. The chance of rain is 50 percent.

Rain and thunderstorms are expected this evening and tonight. Some storms can be strong to severe. Otherwise, it will be mostly cloudy to cloudy with low temperatures in the upper 50s to middle 60s. The winds will be east-southeasterly, at a speed of 5 to 15 knots. The chance of rain is 60 percent.

Update: The Storm Prediction Center includes the western half of the Southern Plains along with eastern/southeastern New Mexico at a “marginal” risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather Wednesday evening through early Thursday morning. Some thunderstorms can produce wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to 1.00 inches (quarter size) in diameter.

Thursday:
More rain and thunderstorms are expected Thursday across the Southern Plains and Rolling Plains. The bulk of the activity will be in the morning. However, some rain and storms are possible during the afternoon. The weather will be partly sunny to mostly cloudy and a bit warmer with temperatures in the mid 70s to mid 80s. WowIt will be out of the south-southeast at 10 to 15 mph. The chance of rain is 50 percent.

Sunrise is at 7:30 AM CST. Sunset is 7:55 PM CST.

Expanded forecasts:
Temperatures are expected to be below average over the weekend. Temperatures will return to normal and slightly higher than normal early next week. Chances of rain and thunderstorms will continue daily until at least Saturday. The weather will be dry on Sunday and Monday, but chances of thunderstorms will return to some areas on Tuesday.

High temperatures on Wednesday will be a bit warmer and range from the upper 60s to middle 70s expected. The weather will be warmer on Thursday with temperatures in the mid 70s to low 80s. Mid 70s to very low 80s are the high temperatures expected on Friday and Saturday. We’ll start to warm up again on Sunday with highs ranging from the upper 70s to mid 80s. We’ll be warmer on Monday with highs in the mid 80s. The upper 80s to 90s are the highs expected on Tuesday.

Low temperatures range from the upper 50s to the middle 60s on Thursday and Friday morning. Mid 50s to lower 60s are morning lows expected Saturday into Monday morning. The upper 50s to mid 60s are the lows expected Tuesday morning.

Drought update:
Drought conditions continue to increase across the Southern Plains and Rolling Plains, according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor update released Thursday, September 7.
Abnormal drought (D0) to extreme (D2) conditions exist throughout the southern plains and rolling plains. The Lubbock metro area is rated in extreme (D2) and moderate drought (D1) conditions as of Thursday’s update. Lubbock is well below four inches of normal precipitation for the year.
