SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts (WWLP) — The Springfield School District canceled after-school activities Tuesday, in response to the dangerously high temperatures here in western Massachusetts.
The Boys and Girls Club of Springfield are preparing for more hot weather this week. “It gets so humid that it’s not really hot, it’s really uncomfortable,” Malika Moore, 12, tells us.
The very hot weather is back, and everyone feels it. Soaring temperatures led to Springfield’s after-school activities being canceled, but when the bell rang, many students still needed a place to go to beat the heat.
The Boys and Girls Club of Springfield, a place for local youth to do just that. And although it might be hot outside, it’s nice and cool here inside thanks to air conditioning, fans and of course plenty of water.
Whether it’s playing card games, video games, or even a lap in the pool indoors, kids at the Boys & Girls Club enable kids to stay cool while also having fun, but most importantly give parents peace of mind knowing their kids are in a safe place . environment.
“Kids still need a place to go,” says Vincent Borello, executive director of the Springfield Boys and Girls Club. “Kids can still come here to play and have fun in a great place. And we keep them hydrated as much as we can.”
Borello adds that his facility is expecting more hot weather, and they make sure they are fully stocked with water bottles for the kids.
22News has reached out to the school district if they plan to cancel more after-school activities this week due to the heat, and we didn’t hear back as of news time.
