Saturday night was a bone-chilling night at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, as temperatures were record low for the wild-card game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins, causing fans and players to huddle, hoping for any semblance of warmth.

When the Dolphins and Chiefs kicked off Saturday night, the temperature was negative 4 degrees at Arrowhead Stadium, marking the fourth-coldest temperature in NFL kickoff history. It looks even colder than that with a wind chill of minus 27, the third coldest on record, according to Communications team leaders.

As temperatures dropped, those filling the 76,416-seat stadium had to do whatever they could to keep warm, including the players. Here’s how some Chiefs fans — and those playing Saturday night — are dealing with the frigid temperatures for the playoff game:

Patrick Mahomes’ helmet was shattered on the hit

With the Chiefs leading 16-7 in the third quarter, quarterback Patrick Mahomes rushed 13 yards to the Dolphins’ 3-yard line before being stopped short of the end zone by Miami safety DeShon Elliott. Mahomes and Elliott collided heads on the play, which then cracked Mahomes’ helmet.

Andy Reid’s mustache froze

If you needed any proof of how cold it was at Arrowhead Stadium, just look at Chiefs coach Andy Reid’s mustache, which turned to ice at halftime.

Travis Kelce’s rumored girlfriend, Taylor Swift, shakes off the sub-zero temperatures at Arrowhead Stadium in a red and yellow puffy coat bearing Kelsey’s name and jersey number No. 87.

Her custom jacket was created by Christine Juszczyk, wife of 49ers All-Pro linebacker Kyle Juszczyk. Kristin Goszczyk has also created gear for Brittany Mahomes, wife of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, wife of Green Bay Packers safety Jonathan Owens.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said he was “excited” about the subzero temperatures on Saturday.

“What could be better? Playing football in January at Arrowhead Stadium is going to be cold,” Mahomes said. “The adrenaline rush gives you the warmth you’re looking for, and you have heaters on both sides of the field. People make it a big deal.” But at the end of the day, you just have to go out and play football.”

Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, a Hawaii native who played his college career at Alabama, said he has never been exposed to temperatures “below 15 degrees.” When asked how he prepared for the weather, Tagovailoa said frankly: “You can’t prepare for a game like this in this type of weather. So it’s going to be a new game.”

Fans arrive at Arrowhead Stadium at 5:30 a.m

Some fans are deterred by Kansas City’s freezing temperatures.

Fans had already turned up at Arrowhead Stadium as early as 5:30 a.m., more than 13 hours before kick-off. KSHB 41 caught up with some fans and asked them why they decided to show up early, when temperatures were around minus 11 degrees, and the wind chill was making it feel like minus 26 degrees.

There was also a tailoring line around 9am
