summary
Expect increased precipitation statewide today, especially across leeward areas, with the greatest shower coverage expected over the Big Island and East Maui. Leeward areas, including the Lahaina and Kula areas on Maui, will remain mostly dry with a few light rains possible. Fresh and increasingly dry trade wind weather will return on Tuesday through the rest of this week.
discussion
Recent satellite and radar images show increasing clouds and rain moving toward leeward areas on most islands early this morning, associated with residual moisture from former Tropical Cyclone Fernanda. The most shower activity is occurring over the coast and leeward slopes of the Big Island, where 0.01 to 0.25 inches of rain has already fallen in some locations over the past six hours.
As we head into the rest of this morning, the leeward areas of the Big Island and Maui will continue to see the bulk of the precipitation. Despite decreasing trends in typical rainfall amounts, we could still see total events of around 2 to 4 inches of rain on the leeward Big Island through tonight. Short periods of heavy rain are possible during this time, which can lead to distressing flooding. On Maui, 1 to 2 inches of rain will be possible, primarily concentrated on East Maui’s slopes and coastal areas. Windy areas of Maui (including Lahaina and Kula) will remain mostly dry, with a few light rain showers possible during the evening hours. As for the rest of the states, light to moderate rain is expected to spread mainly to windward and mountainous areas until Tuesday morning. Humidity levels will be higher than normal during this time, which will make daytime temperatures hotter than normal.
Trade winds will also trend upward over the next couple of days as surface high pressure intensifies in the far north of the state and drifts slightly south. Moderate winds this morning will steadily increase to breeze levels through tonight. Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday, conditions will dry out, with a mid-level ridge appearing over the area. A mostly dry and breezy trade wind system is likely to persist through the rest of this week.
airline
The eastern trade winds will continue to be moderate to brisk, with clouds and showers appearing over the mountainous and windy areas. Shower coverage increased steadily overnight, which will continue today as an area of deep tropical moisture moves in. Expect periods of MVFR CIGs/VSBYs for leeward and mocha areas, especially in the eastern end of the state. Elsewhere, VFR conditions will prevail.
AIRMET Sierra Blocking Mountains are now in effect for windward areas from Oahu to the Big Island, which may persist through much of the day today.
Navy
The trade winds will gradually increase today with an intensifying surface high centered around 1,600 nautical miles northeast of the islands, and the remainder of Fernanda passing well south of the islands. Fresh to locally strong trade winds are then expected to continue throughout the week, and a Small Boat Advisory will remain in effect for windier areas around Maui and the Big Island.
Surfing along all the beaches will still be relatively small today. Long-range swell E from former major Hurricane Hillary is expected to reach the far eastern Pacific by tonight, peaking near 4 feet on Tuesday and Wednesday, then decreasing Wednesday and Thursday night. Confidence remains low on details, but beach surfing is likely to remain below advisory levels, with the biggest surfing centered on the Big Island and Maui. As the longer-term trade wind swell diminishes, the short-term trade wind swell will increase to approach seasonal norms. A small to medium-period SSE swell (with a little SW swell energy as well) will bring small waves to south-facing beaches in the next couple of days.
HFO Watches/Warnings/Advice
Small Boat Advisory until 6pm GMT Wednesday for Maalaea Bay, Pailolo Channel, Alenuihaha Channel, Big Island Leeward Waters and Big Island Southeast Waters.
