summary

Moderate to local trade winds are expected to continue through tonight with rain during the early morning hours as a weak low trough passes through the western half of the state. Trade winds will decrease quickly on Sunday and become light Monday through Tuesday. These widespread light winds will allow the coverage of the onshore and offshore breezes to be expanded at a local level. Converging sea breeze winds may bring scattered, slow-moving rain showers in the afternoon over inland parts of the island on Monday and Tuesday. There is still a slow strengthening in the trade winds in the forecast Wednesday into Friday.

discussion

Infrared satellite images this morning show more stable clouds above the tidal stream as the low moves westward out of the state. Shower trends will ease later this morning as more stable conditions return. Trade wind temperature inversion heights remain at 6,000 to 8,000 feet as seen on this morning’s 12Z (2 AM HST) upper air ballooning in Lihue and Hilo. A series of short waves moving into the area should reduce reversal highs today, reducing shower trends later this morning.
A high pressure system in the far northern Hawaiian area will slowly weaken today as deepening upper lows north of the state begin to erode the ridges north of the islands. Expect a sharp drop in trade wind speeds starting Sunday and continuing through Tuesday as lows develop north of the island chain, which are surface reflections of these upper lows. As large-scale trade winds diminish, differences in heating of islands and oceans at a local scale will cause land-sea breezes to expand during the night. Trade winds will slowly return to the area Wednesday through Friday. A persistent trough pattern north of the Hawaiian Islands will slow trade wind speed trends during the second half of next week.
The weather pattern changes starting Sunday as we move from trade winds to afternoon sea breezes. Instead of windward and mountainous showers during the overnight and early morning hours, we will shift to converging sea breeze winds, warming the island and rising high to gather forces to produce scattered, slow-moving clouds and showers over the interior of the island each afternoon. As we move back into the trade winds Wednesday into Friday, areas of sea breeze will shrink in coverage to the more sheltered western slopes of terrain and rain activity will shift to more isolated inland showers in the afternoon with scattered showers overnight into early morning over the wind and mountain . Regions.

airline

Trade winds will be moderate to locally active today, then gradually weaken from Sunday to Tuesday. Clouds and rain will continue to favor areas of wind and mocha during the morning hours today, which could lead to short periods of MVFR conditions in these areas. Otherwise, VFR terms will generally prevail.
AIRMET Tango for Mountain Disturbance remains in effect for windward portions of Molokai, Oahu and Kauai, but will likely be dropped later this morning or afternoon due to weakening winds.
With winds weakening from Sunday to Tuesday, cloud cover and showers are likely to begin to engage with a land/sea breeze system with offshore winds overnight and clouds and showers forming across the boundary converging over inland and mocha sites during the day.

Navy

A strong surface ridge of high pressure is located far north of the state and will help maintain fresh and locally strong trade winds through tonight. As a result, a Small Craft Advisory (SCA) remains in effect for typically windier areas around Maui County and the Big Island. On Sunday, the winds will deviate towards the southeast and weaken as a low air depression passes north of the region. Light to gentle breezes will continue until the middle of next week.
A refreshing trade will keep the waves rough and choppy along east-facing beaches today. A long-period (~10 s) northeasterly swell, associated with former tropical cyclone Irwin, is also incorporated. However, peak waves on the eastern shore must remain below the 10-foot (HSA) advisory threshold. Eastern Shore waves are expected to trend lower on Sunday and into early next week with weak trading.
Waves on the South Shore should remain small through Sunday. Moderate swell (3 to 4 feet) from the south to southwest is expected to fill slowly Monday and peak Tuesday into Wednesday near HSA levels, then slowly decline through the rest of the week.
For north- and west-facing beaches, waves are expected to increase today with the arrival of swells resulting from reduced storm force (former Tropical Cyclone Damri). This swell is expected to come from the northwest (310 degrees), then gradually move to the northwest (340 degrees) by early next week.
