Miami Heat beats Charlotte Hornets 104-87 but loses Jaime Jaquez Jr. to injury – NBC 6 South Florida

Bam Adebayo scored 24 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists to help the Miami Heat beat the Charlotte Hornets 104-87 on Sunday night.

Tyler Herro made four 3-pointers and scored 21 points for Miami, which never trailed. Duncan Robinson scored 19 points, and Jaime Jaquez Jr. scored 15 before leaving early in the second quarter with a groin strain.

The Heat went 11-for-25 from 3-point range while completing a four-game sweep of the regular season series against Charlotte. They also won their 22nd straight home game against Southeastern Division opponents.

“This will probably be a trap game,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “I thought the approach was great and everything was achieved, especially in the first half, by our defensive effort.”

Terry Rozier scored 26 points for Charlotte, and LaMelo Ball added 21 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Miles Bridges finished the match with 20 points.

The Hornets have dropped five in a row and 16 of 17 overall.

The Hornets scored 31 points in the first half, the lowest in the NBA in any half this season, and trailed by 21 points in the second half. They went 1-for-18 from 3-point range and committed 10 turnovers in the first two quarters.

“I thought early on we actually got a lot of good shots that we made. They just didn’t go in,” Hornets coach Steve Clifford said. “It’s going to happen. I think the biggest part of tonight is when the ball doesn’t go in, we have to keep defending. What we haven’t done in the last three games is we haven’t defended anywhere near the level we have been. This is what we have to return to.”

Ball, who returned Friday after missing 20 games due to a right ankle injury, scored 14 points in the third period. A jump shot with 6:06 remaining cut the lead to 64-52 before Miami responded with a 13-5 run.

“Basketball is a running game, and they’re going to make shots,” Herro said. “It’s just about responding and making sure we play the right way.”

Charlotte lost its previous two matches by a total of 61 points. He opened a three-game trip with a 135-99 loss in San Antonio on Friday night.

“We’ve got to have better acceptance. It’s that simple,” Hornets forward P.J. Washington said. “We’re making mistakes in coverages, we’re not doing the right thing on offense, we just have to do a lot of cleanup.”

Jaquez, who played in every game of his rookie season, will not travel for the Heat’s two-game road trip that begins Monday in Brooklyn. He suffered a similar injury before the start of the season, but he does not believe this injury is serious.

“Things slowly started to get worse over the course of the match,” Jaquez said. “I don’t think it’s that serious but there’s a lot of prevention that we’re looking at now.”

Frustrations for Ball mounted in the second quarter. He was lying on the ground when Adebayo was grabbed by the leg while trying to run towards the other end of the field.

Miami star Jimmy Butler was sidelined due to an injury to his right foot. He has missed 11 of the team’s last 12 games and 15 of the season. He is on the verge of becoming ineligible for a postseason award due to league participation rules.

Butler is expected to travel with the team on the road trip.

It was the beginning of nostalgia week for Miami. The Heat held a halftime ceremony to commemorate Dwyane Wade’s induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame last year. During the ceremony, Heat president Pat Riley announced that a statue of Wade will be unveiled outside the Cascia Center next year. For their next home game on Friday, the Heat will retire Udonis Haslem’s No. 40 jersey.

“I was born and raised in Chicago, but this is where I grew up,” Wade said. “From the time I was 21 to 37, I grew up here. A lot of the fan base grew up with me. … There’s no love like the love of Miami, and every time I come back here I feel that.”
