More snow Friday in metro Detroit as subzero wind chills return soon: What to know

4 weather warning -We have another snowy start on Friday.

  • A winter weather advisory is in effect until 1 p.m. Friday along and south of I-94 in Washtenaw, Wayne and Monroe counties.

  • A winter weather advisory is in effect for the Thumb, including Sanilac and St. Clair counties, until 4 p.m. Friday.

Snowfall totals will range between 1-2 inches in most areas of metro Detroit, with higher amounts possible in the Thumb area as lake effect snow bands affect parts of that area. Those areas to the southeast and northeast could see more than 2 inches of accumulation.

Sunrise today is 7:58 am

Snow continues to fall throughout the day, and is widespread in the morning. There will be some heavier bands of snow in the northern parts of our area.

The snow bands will push down and out starting around midday, and should taper off by about 5 p.m

Highs will be in the low 20s.

Sunset tonight at 5:31 p.m

The remaining snow will taper off this evening. An air mass will escape from the Arctic, causing temperatures to drop significantly overnight.

Arctic temperatures return this weekend

The cold weather will continue throughout the weekend, with the coldest weather tomorrow morning. Temperatures by Saturday morning will be in the single digits with wind chills around -10 to -15 degrees, near the wind chill warning threshold.

Highs will be in the 20s on Saturday and Sunday. Both days will be relatively dry.

Temperatures that feel like subzero wind chills will include Sunday morning as well. Although not as cold as Saturday morning, it will feel below zero in the morning, and about 10 degrees below air temperatures throughout the day.

Warm up next week

We then move into a warm trend next week, with temperatures near average on Monday and then above average the rest of the week. Highs will start in the low 30s on Monday and increase throughout the week.

We could see a wintry mix moving in Monday night into Tuesday, but as temperatures rise, we expect a shift to rain by Tuesday. The chance of rain will likely continue on Wednesday and Thursday.

Between the temperatures and rain, we will finally start to see some thawing/thawing across the area.

Initial indications are that temperatures will rise to around 40 degrees mid- to late-next week.
