Roma and Lazio will try to get themselves back into the Champions League picture on Sunday when they face off in the first Roma derby of the season, a fiery match that has already put Jose Mourinho on the warpath.

Mourinho’s side will have two days of less preparation as they face Slavia Prague on Thursday evening in the Europa League while Lazio narrowly beat Feyenoord in a more unusual atmosphere on Tuesday.

The Portuguese has had a knack for scheduling and has been involved in a row with Serie A bosses over his claims that Roma had been deliberately obstructed by the league.

Lazio coach, Maurizio Sarri, added fuel to the fire on Tuesday evening by downplaying Mourinho’s complaints, saying that Roma was “playing a friendly match in Prague.”

Mourinho, whose team is four points adrift of seventh place in the Champions League, one behind Lazio, criticized Sarri on Wednesday, saying: “If there is anyone who should feel insulted, it is Slavia, the people of Prague.”

Mourinho told reporters: “I respect the opposition.

“The difference between a coach who has won 26 titles and a coach who has won almost none is that mentality.”

Mourinho has lost three of his four matches against Sarri’s Lazio since they both took over as coach of the capital club in the summer of 2021.

But Sarri has had a tougher time this season than last, when they finished second behind champions Napoli, who host struggling Empoli on Sunday afternoon.

Sarri’s task against Roma will be more difficult in light of the possible absence of key midfielder Luis Alberto and Italian winger Mattia Zaccagni. Both were injured during Tuesday’s battle with Feyenoord, which sparked Lazio’s bid to reach the last 16 of the Champions League.

Meanwhile, Roma should be able to rely on their talisman Paulo Dybala who returned in style in the recent win over Lecce last weekend and is likely to be on the bench in Prague, perhaps contemplating the more volatile Italian derby.

Competing with Roma and Lazio for European places are Fiorentina and Bologna, who meet in Florence on Sunday in a match between the two most interesting teams in the league.

Coaches Vincenzo Italiano and Thiago Motta are rising stars after transforming the sleepy mid-tier members of Serie A into exciting, modern teams following in the footsteps of Italy coach Luciano Spalletti.

Bologna sits in sixth place, one point behind Roma, having already played Lazio, Inter, Juventus, Napoli and Milan – the only team to beat them – in their first 11 matches.

Inter Milan hopes to head into the international break next week at the top of the league. They host Frosinone.

In top form after reaching the Champions League knockout stages with two games to go on Wednesday, Inter have won five straight matches in all competitions and have captain Lautaro Martinez at his best.

Argentine striker Martinez is set to start at the San Siro after coming off the bench and pushing Inter over the line with the winning goal in Salzburg.

And he should have opportunities to add to his massive league tally of 12 goals in 11 games against Frosinone, who under Eusebio Di Francesco are playing an extended campaign that took them to mid-table after their promotion last season.

Player to watch – Mathias Sule

Argentine attacking midfielder Sule has been a revelation at Frosinone this season, scoring five goals and setting up another in an impressive start since arriving on loan from Juventus in the summer.

Sule, 20, has been a big part of Serie B champions Frosinone’s rapid adaptation to Serie A, with reports that Juventus could recall him in January.

Sulé was born in Mar del Plata and played for Argentina’s U-20 national team, but he could join compatriot Matteo Retegui in the Italian national team because he has dual citizenship.
