NEW JERSEY – Meteorologists issued more severe thunderstorm warnings in New Jersey Monday afternoon, with storms capable of delivering damaging winds, large hail, flooding and lightning arriving.

Burlington, Hunterdon, Morris, Somerset and Sussex counties are under a severe thunderstorm warning until 4:30 p.m. Monday.

“Heavy rain” is occurring with this storm, the forecaster said in its updates for the four northernmost provinces on that list. The National Weather Service added that damage to trees and vehicles is possible with wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour.

Earlier in the afternoon, tornado warnings were issued for Warren, Hunterdon and Somerset counties. The NWS has not yet said whether it is investigating reports of wind damage in these areas.

A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 9 p.m. for Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Salem, Somerset, Sussex and Warren counties, according to the National Weather Service.

The main event is expected to move from west to east starting at 2 p.m., with severe thunderstorms and flooding possible after 4 p.m., the weather service said.

The potential for damaging wind gusts of up to 70 mph will be the greatest threat to people and property across the state, but residents should also be aware of flash flooding and isolated hail up to Ping pong ball The National Weather Service office in Mount Holly said as the storm moved in late Monday afternoon.

“Widespread rainfall of 1 to 2 inches with localized amounts of 3 to 5 inches appears possible with recurring storms,” the weather service said Monday morning.

A hazardous weather forecast is also in effect for all 21 New Jersey counties due to potential flooding through Monday night. While south of I-95 is at “increased” risk for several severe, persistent storms, the northern area is set to see possible scattered, short-lived or non-widespread storms.

The storm producing this severe weather will take several days to move across the Northeast, AccuWeather added. Wet weather with scattered storms is expected to continue in the state until at least midweek, when the daily threat of thunderstorms drops to about 50 percent from Thursday to Sunday.

“Although extensive flooding is not expected every day across the Northeast, wet conditions will favor heavy rain,” AccuWeather said. “Heavy rainfall may cause puddles on roads and reduced visibility, both of which will certainly slow motorists in the area.”
