Transitional weather

A batch of warm air will collide with the remaining cold air, producing some wintry weather before it takes over the latter half of the week.

First off, the week will be cool with clear skies across the Finger Lakes region on Monday morning. Some pockets start the day low near 0 degrees, but most of the area is between 5-15 degrees.

Clouds will gradually form from the west this morning and should become denser in the afternoon. No rain is expected during the daylight hours.

Steady southwest winds of just over 5 mph will help push temperatures into the low to mid 30s this afternoon.

Some brief snow showers will be possible this evening and overnight, but there shouldn’t be much. There may be a few pockets of freezing drizzle early Tuesday morning, leading to some slick areas.

Nighttime temperatures will drop only slightly, ranging from around 30 degrees in the north to the upper 20s in the south. A few mid-20s would be possible in central New York.

Snow will increase from west to east during the latter half of Tuesday morning. Some freezing rain or sleet may initially mix through the southern tier. Snow should fall steadily through the remainder of the daylight hours.

Highs Tuesday afternoon will be in the mid 30s. This should help keep roads in good condition, even with an inch or two of accumulation.

Tuesday evening, snowfall will gradually taper off to showers and should change to rain and freezing rain. Freezing rain will likely fall across the Southern Tier and central New York, but it’s important not to focus too much on those labels. There will be pockets of ice outside those areas, and there will be areas within those areas that only see rain.

January thaw

By midday hours Wednesday, there should be enough warm air to prevent rain. Rain may become widespread and steady again during the morning and into the afternoon.

The rain is expected to subside for some time later in the evening and Wednesday.

Another batch of widespread rain is scheduled to fall on Thursday. This rain will be heavy in the morning and some areas could see more than a half inch of rain.

Light southerly winds will continue throughout Wednesday and Thursday.

Temperatures on Wednesday will reach the low 40s. Nighttime temperatures will only drop to around 40 degrees.

Highs on Thursday will reach the mid 40s with a slight drop in temperatures Thursday night. Temperatures may rise slightly overnight.

Friday will be the warmest day of the week, with temperatures in some areas exceeding 50 degrees. Some rain will be possible in the morning.

Temperatures are expected to return to seasonal levels over the weekend. High temperatures will be around 40 degrees on Saturday and into the mid 30s on Sunday. Both days look cloudy with some rain here or there, but nothing major.

Next week looks cooler, but not cold, with temperatures near average in the 30s. Warmer weather will be possible again in early February, but there are hints in some longer-term global weather patterns of another cold spell in the latter half of February.

Only time will tell if it comes to fruition.
