School closures and cancellations due to winter weather forecast

Evangeline Parish
The Evangeline Parish School Board has announced they will close schools both Tuesday, January 16, and Wednesday, January 17.

The school board released the following notice:

In communication with our local 911/Office of Emergency Preparedness (OEP) and based upon the most recent National Weather Service (NWS) advisory, indicating extremely cold temperatures with a possibility of unsafe driving conditions tomorrow (1-16-2024) and Wednesday (1-17-2024), the Evangeline Parish School District, all campuses and district offices, will be closed 1-16-2024 and 1-17-2024. The safety of our students and employees remains our top priority.

 

We anticipate that we will resume regular operations Thursday, January 18, 2024. Check local/regional media outlets, EPSB’s website and social media platform for updates.

Sacred Heart School – Based on an advisory from our local weather advisory, as a result of anticipated unsafe driving conditions due to extreme weather Sacred Heart School will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, January 16th. We will update everyone as soon as we receive additional information.

St. Mary Parish

The following was released via a Facebook post made by St. Mary Parish Schools:

Due to extreme winter weather conditions, St. Mary Parish Public Schools will be closed Tuesday, January 16th.

While we will continue to monitor potential weather concerns, we do expect to return to normal school hours for Wednesday, January 17th.

Thank you for your understanding as we take precautionary measures to ensure the safety of our school families.

V. B. Glencoe Charter School – Closed on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. We will closely monitor the weather and make an announcement regarding Wednesday on Tuesday evening.

St. Landry Parish

Due to possible unsafe weather conditions from the forecasted arctic blast, all St. Landry Parish School District schools and offices will be closed on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, and Wednesday, January 17, 2024.

With icy roads and freezing temperatures expected throughout the days ahead, we have made the decision to cancel classes, sporting activities, and practices to ensure the safety of our students, families, and staff.

Opelousas Catholic – Due to anticipated unsafe driving conditions, OC will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday. We plan to return for a full day on Thursday as of now. An email will be sent to parents & staff if that changes for any reason. Stay warm Vikes!

St. Edmond Catholic School, Eunice – Out of an abundance of caution due to the impending extreme freezing temperatures and winter precipitation, SECS will be closed on Tuesday, 1/16/24 and Wednesday, 1/17/24. Praying for everyone to remain safe and warm.

Good Shepherd Montessori School – Closed Tuesday, January 16, and Wednesday, January 17.

Acadia Parish

The following was released by Acadia Parish Schools:

Out of an abundance of caution for students, staff, and the community, the Acadia Parish School System will be closed Tuesday, January 16th, and Wednesday, January 17 due to prolonged below-freezing temperatures.

We plan to resume normal operations on Thursday, January 18, 2024.

The scheduled Acadia Parish School Board meeting on Tuesday, January 16 will be moved to Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at 5:00 p.m.

We will keep all stakeholders for the Acadia Parish School System informed of any additional developments due to the cold weather moving forward.

LSUE

LSU Eunice’s campus will be closed on Tuesday, January 16 due to expected extreme winter weather in and around the Eunice area. All in-person classes will be canceled for the day.

Chartwell’s Food Services will be opened to serve the residents of Bengal Village.

Classes and normal business operations are currently scheduled to resume on Wednesday, January 17. LSU Eunice officials will continue to monitor the forecasts and local conditions with any updates being announced on social media and www.lsue.edu (lsue.edu).

Vermilion Parish

Vermilion Parish School System released the following message on Facebook:

Out of an abundance of caution for our students and employees, the Vermilion Parish School System will be closed on Tuesday, January 16. We will monitor the weather situation and make a decision about Wednesday around noon tomorrow.
We have been in contact with the National Weather Service and OEP as well as with other local school officials in an effort to make the best decision. Thank you for understanding and stay warm.

Vermilion Catholic – Closed Tuesday, January 16, and Wednesday, January 17.

Iberia Parish
The Iberia Parish School District released the following information:

After the most recent briefing with the National Weather Service (NWS), the following updates for the Iberia Parish School District are enacted:

  • Schools remain closed for students due to the scheduled Professional Development Day for teachers on Tuesday, January 16th.
  • Due to the increasing chance of precipitation into the evening and additional government closures announced for tomorrow, Iberia Parish School District has decided to CANCEL our In-Service Day for teachers tomorrow. District Offices will also be CLOSED.

St. Martin

The St. Martin Parish School System released the following information:

After communication with the National Weather Service, all St. Martin Parish schools will be closed on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, and Wednesday, January 17, 2024. Guidance on the professional development sessions scheduled for 1/16/2024 will be sent out by school administrators. All students will participate in continuous learning from home on 1/17/2024. The safety of our students, families, and employees remains our top priority. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

St. Bernard School – Closed Tuesday, January 16.

Episcopal School of Acadiana – Both ESA campuses, Lafayette and Cade, will be closed Tuesday, January 16.

Lafayette Parish

SLCC – All SLCC campuses will be closed Tuesday, January 16. Normal operations are set to resume on Wednesday, January 17.

UL Lafayette – Due to changing weather conditions, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16; classes will be canceled, and offices will be closed. Most campus dining locations will operate as normal on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

The University plans to reopen for operations and instruction on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

The last day for online registration (add/drop) has been extended to Thursday, Jan. 18.

The University will continue to monitor the National Weather Service forecast. Should weather conditions change, information will be provided on the University’s website (louisiana.edu) and official social media accounts.

LPSS released the following:

After assessing the impact of the extreme cold weather in our area and in consultation with local officials, the Lafayette Parish School System has decided to close all schools and facilities on Tuesday,

January 16, 2024 in the best interest of safety for students, faculty, and staff.

We will continue to monitor weather and road conditions and will provide updates to our families regarding school status for Wednesday, January 17, 2024, as the details become available.

Acadiana Renaissance Charter Academy – Closed due to wintry weather.

St. Thomas More Catholic High School – STM will be closed tomorrow, January 16 due to the national weather service winter weather advisory. Classes will resume on Wednesday, January 17.

Sugar ‘n Spice Children’s Academy – All locations of Sugar ‘n Spice Children’s Academy and Vacation Station will be closed Tuesday, January 16th in anticipation of freezing temperatures and possible icy road conditions.

Gethsemane Christian Academy and Gethsemane Lapetite– Closed on Tuesday.

Lafayette For My Child Learning Center– Closed on Tuesday, January 16. We will continue to monitor weather conditions.

Episcopal School of Acadiana – Both ESA campuses, Lafayette and Cade, will be closed Tuesday, January 16.

Youngsville Christian School – Closed Tuesday, January 16.

First Baptist Christian School Lafayette – FBCS will be closed tomorrow, January 16, due to the National Weather Service winter weather advisory. Classes will resume on Wednesday, January 17. The First Baptist Lafayette Men’s Breakfast on Tuesday, January 16 will be rescheduled.

Jefferson Davis
Jefferson Davis Parish Schools released the following notice:

Due to the extreme temperatures, wind chill, and possible water issues at our schools, Jeff Davis Parish Schools will be closed on Tuesday, January 15, 2024. We will survey our schools on Tuesday afternoon and meet with officials at that time and make a decision on school closures for Wednesday January 16, 2024 . Our students‘ well-being and safety is a top priority. We will continue to put our students’ safety first.

Calcasieu Parish
Due to the chance of freezing precipitation impacting roadway conditions, all Calcasieu Parish School Board schools and facilities will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, January 16. All sporting events are also canceled for the day. With current forecasts not including precipitation after tomorrow, we do anticipate opening as normal on Wednesday, January 17. We will update families and employees on the status of school for Wednesday by noon tomorrow.

SOWELA – Due to the chance of freezing precipitation impacting roadway conditions, all SOWELA locations will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, January 16. We anticipate opening as normal on Wednesday, January 17, and will continue to keep you posted on any changes.

Additional Closures and Cancellations:

STATE OFFICESAll state offices will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 16, due to severe weather. This is a statewide office closure.

All agency heads are responsible for determining those essential personnel who should remain on duty, report for duty or those who should report to alternate work sites as necessary. Officials continue to monitor conditions throughout the state, and this announcement may be updated. This office closure applies to all nonessential employees, including those authorized to work from home.

Iberia Council on Aging’s meal services for Tuesday, January 16, 2024 and Wednesday, January 17, 2024 are cancelled due to the inclement weather. All services should resume on Thursday, January 18, 2024.

Arc of Acadiana Day Programs – Closed Tuesday, January 16, due to the inclement weather.

St. Martin Council On Aging – Due to severe weather warnings, the St. Martin Council On Aging, Inc. is closed. They will resume services on Thursday, January 18 at 7:30 am.
