Severe thunderstorm warning for several areas in Northeast Ohio

CLEVELAND – However, more severe weather occurred across Northeast Ohio Thursday evening and into early Friday morning.

The National Meteorological Directorate issued a Severe thunderstorm warning Until 3:45 a.m. for the following areas:

  • Southern Richland County in north-central Ohio…
  • South-central Ashland County in north-central Ohio…

At 2:40 a.m., severe thunderstorms occurred along a line extending from near Lexington to near Marseille, moving southeast at 50 mph. This storm could produce winds of 60 mph.

The thunderstorm warning has since expired.

Flooding from heavy rains Wednesday put many areas in Northeast Ohio under at least a flood watch, if not a warning.

The National Meteorological Directorate issued a Flood warning For the following regions until further notice:

  • Huron River near Milan in Erie County
  • Black River in Elyria in Lorain County
  • Vermilion River near Vermilion affecting Lorain and Erie counties

a Flood watch — which was supposed to be in effect throughout Northeast Ohio until 8 a.m. Friday — was canceled hours before scheduled.

Wednesday

At 10:24 p.m., Doppler radar indicated the occurrence of thunderstorms leading to heavy rain in the warned area. Between two and three inches of rain fell. An additional one to three inches of rain is possible in the warning area.

Flash flood warning In effect in central Stark County and southeastern Summit County until 2:45 a.m

At 9:46 p.m. Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warning area. Between 1.5 and 2.5 inches of rain fell. An additional 1 to 2 inches of rain is possible in the warning area.

Flash flood warning Also in effect in northern Lorain County and central Cuyahoga County until 2:30 a.m

At 9:36 p.m., Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warning area. Between 1.5 and 3.0 inches of rain fell. Heavy rain will return to the area with an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain possible in the warning area. The NWS describes flash flooding in these areas as “life-threatening.”

Areas affected include: Cleveland, Lorain, Elyria, Vermilion, Parma, Lakewood, Cleveland Heights, Westlake, North Ridgeville, Solon, Avon Lake, Warrensville Heights, Amherst, Highland Hills, North Olmsted,
Garfield Heights, Shaker Heights, Maple Heights, South Euclid and Avon.

Also Flash flood warning Effective in the following areas until 2:15 a.m

  • Lorain County
  • Southern Cuyahoga County
  • Northern Medina Province
  • North Summit County

At 9:09 p.m., Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warning area. Between 0.5 and 1.5 inches of rain fell. An additional 1 to 1.5 inches of rain is possible in the warning area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin soon.

Flash flood warning It is in effect throughout Cuyahoga County, as well as northeastern Lorain County, southwestern Lake County and southwestern Geauga County until 1:45 a.m.

At 8:32 p.m., Doppler radar indicated the occurrence of thunderstorms leading to heavy rain in the warned area. Between 0.5 and 1.5 inches of rain fell. An additional 1 to 2 inches of rain is possible in the warning area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin soon.

Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin soon and may occur in creeks, small streams, urban areas, highways, streets and tunnels as well as poor drainage and other low-lying areas.

In parts of northeast Cuyahoga County and southwest Lake County, two to three inches of rain fell, with an additional inch or more of rain possible, the NWS noted. In those areas, the authority considers the floods to be “life-threatening.”

Parts of Erie and Huron counties were under a tornado warning issued shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday. The rest of the region dealt with severe thunderstorms and heavy rain that caused flooding in several areas, including Parma, where responders helped stranded motorists on Brookpark Road and West 52.
