Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for San Diego – NBC 7 San Diego

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued Monday afternoon for southwest San Diego County as a thunderstorm swept through the county.

The National Weather Service said the storm was over Lakeside near El Cajon, moving southwest at 25 mph through San Diego with possible thunderstorms and a chance of rain. It would have brought large hail and damaging winds.

Areas that could be affected include:

Hola View, El Cajon, National City, La Mesa, Poway, Ramona, Alpine, Mission Valley, Hillcrest, Linda View, North Park, Terrasanta, University City, La Jolla, Valley Center, Cuyamaca Ranch State Park, Escondido, Santee, Lemon Grove, San Diego Ranch.

He urged area residents to stay in their homes, go to the lower floors of their buildings, and stay away from windows. The warning was in effect until 2:24 p.m

Mountains and deserts will experience showers and thunderstorms first, then drift into inland valleys and beaches. We were seeing strong winds, heavy rain, and lightning with these storms. Offshore winds will also be present throughout the day, NBC 7 Meteorologist Sheena Parvin said.

Any rain showers should end by sunset on Monday.

Isolated rain and thunderstorms are possible in the mountains and foothills at times in the afternoon and evening through Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather is expected to be partly cloudy along the coast this week, with daytime highs in the low 70s. Overnight lows will be in the 50s in most of San Diego County, and in the 40s in Escondido.

Dangerous marine weather is not expected until Thursday. The surf forecast for San Diego on Monday includes a moderate rip current, with waves 2 to 4 feet high, with swells west of 280 degrees.

The deserts are expected to be clear and mostly sunny, with highs in the 70s to mid-80s all week. Conditions are expected to be partly cloudy and sunny in the mountains, with light rain possible during the middle of the week and highs in the mid-60s, the National Weather Service said.
