High pressure return
Today will be a transition day as low pressure departs over New England and high pressure builds up from the Ohio Valley.
Already this morning, some areas have cleared and the day started with sunny skies. Most of the clouds in the region are located over the southwestern tier and areas east of Cayuga Lake.
The weather continues to be choppy during the morning hours before most areas become sunny in the afternoon.
Rainfall this morning will be limited to a few drops near the eastern shore of Lake Ontario. This will be the last rain shower our area sees until at least the end of the week.
Northwesterly winds will be on the gusty side today as two opposite pressure systems are located in the area. Wind speeds will be over 10 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.
Winds will keep temperatures in check with highs in the mid 60s. Warmer areas typically creep into the upper 60s, while some hilltops fall into the low 60s.
The winds calm down in the late afternoon and become almost calm during the night. With mostly clear skies, temperatures will drop with temperatures reaching the 40s Celsius overnight. Many areas will end up in the mid 40s, with lakeshores in the upper 40s to near 50 degrees. Pockets of the low 40s across the Southwest Tier and Central New York will not be surprising.
The sun will rise on Wednesday, and the winds will be northwesterly and light northerly. Temperatures will add a few degrees to highs in the 60s to near 70 degrees. Temperatures in the Southern Tier valleys from Dansville to Binghamton can reach just over 70 degrees.
Wednesday night will be clear, calm and cool again with similar temperatures in the upper 40s. The southwestern tier will have a lower chance of seeing the low 40s, but areas east of Cayuga Lake may have a higher chance.
Thursday will be similar to Wednesday, just a little warmer again. Expect plenty of sunshine with highs ranging from the upper 60s in the highlands to a few mid-70s in places like Rochester, Dansville, and Elmira. Most of the area should be around 70 degrees or just above.

Dry weather eventually ends
By Thursday evening, light southeasterly winds will blow as the first sign of weather change. These winds will continue until Friday, when their speed will increase to more than 5 mph.
This wind shift should introduce some additional moisture into the atmosphere, and as high pressure slides toward the east, at least some clouds will begin to develop.
This doesn’t mean Friday won’t be sunny. In fact, it should be very sunny. Friday will also likely end up as the warmest day of the week with the low and mid 70s widespread.
Forecast certainty begins to decline on Saturday when a band of clouds forms from the south. The weather is expected to be dry, but sunshine may be limited.
Temperatures will likely drop a few degrees if the sun is blocked, but highs should remain around 70 degrees.
Rain chances on Sunday are uncertain, but this will be our next chance for any rain. The unstable weather is likely to continue into early next week as well. However, peak rain chances may not arrive until Tuesday and Wednesday.
It should rain sometime during the Sunday-Wednesday window. Stay tuned.
Temperatures will eventually depend on rain as well. If one of those days ends up cloudy and rainy throughout, expect highs to remain in the 60s. Otherwise, temperatures will have a good chance of reaching around 70 degrees or higher.
It looks as if temperatures will remain in this general neighborhood for the foreseeable future as September closes and we head into October.
