Snow live updates in Ireland as three Met Eireann weather warnings come into effect from the early hours of Thursday

The Irish Meteorological Service has warned that hazardous travel conditions will grip much of Ireland over the next 24 hours.

There are three separate yellow weather warnings for Met Eireann for Thursday.




A yellow status alert for snow and ice affecting counties Clare, Tipperary, Galway, Laois, Offaly, Westmeath and Wicklow will be active from 3am until 1pm on Thursday.


A similar yellow weather warning for snow and ice for counties Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo and Longford will come into effect from 5am and last until 8pm on Thursday.

There is also a separate yellow rain warning for counties Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Meath, Wexford and Wicklow. This weather alert is active for 24 hours from 5 a.m. Thursday.

A layer of snow is expected to fall on parts of Ireland this week as a severe cold wave sweeps the country.

Meteorologists warned that temperatures will drop rapidly over the coming days, with occasional snow and frost falling in the winter.

Weather warnings, originally issued for a few provinces, have been upgraded to cover the majority of the island. There are currently two separate status yellow “snow and ice” alerts, as well as a status yellow “rain” alert. They begin to take effect overnight.

Snow and ice weather warnings apply to the following counties:

  • Clare, Tipperary, Galway, Laois, Offaly, Westmeath and Wicklow (valid: 03:00 Thursday 02/08/2024 to 13:00 Thursday 02/08/2024)
  • Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo and Longford (valid: from 05:00 Thursday 02/08/2024 to 20:00 Thursday 02/08/2024)

Met Eireann lists the following as possible impacts of severe weather:

  • Dangerous travel conditions
  • Poor vision
  • Snow on untreated surfaces
