Erie County has a long way to go to reach average snowfall for this time of year.

The weather for the rest of this week could provide some help.

The National Weather Service in Cleveland expects 60% or more of snow Wednesday night into Saturday, with 10 inches or more of new snow possible.

The high winds that have battered the county over the past week should also fade, as should the bitter low temperatures and wind chills.

Erie County monthly and seasonal snowfall totals

Erie International Airport recorded 5.2 inches of new snow Tuesday — your experience may vary — bringing January’s snowfall total to 7.6 inches. The average snowfall through Jan. 16 is 17.3 inches, according to weather service records dating back to 1873.

Since Dec. 1, the airport has had only 9 inches of snow. The normal value is 43.6 inches, although the total in 2023 was less than that, 8.6 inches.

The region could begin to reduce this deficit in the coming days.
