The weather is getting colder today, with some snow appearing on Sunday

The bitter cold turns brutal today as another wave of arctic air spreads across Kansas. A few snow showers will move along Interstate 70 this morning and dissipate by sunrise, with slight accumulations possible to the north.

Wind chill warnings are in effect for the entire KSN viewing area and will remain in effect until noon on Tuesday.

Today’s high temperatures range from near zero or just below zero to the upper single digits.

With gusty winds combined with very cold air, wind chill factors will be very low, especially in northwest Kansas where it may feel as low as 30 below zero at times.

The winds will calm down tonight and that will help some, but another night of dangerous lows awaits with near subzero temperatures by Sunday morning.

It will be difficult to shake off the negative sign tomorrow as clouds thicken and block out the sun.

Another round of snow develops and moves quickly across the region from west to east. This will favor southern Kansas, especially areas farther east, as they will find slightly better humidity to the east.

Given how cold it is, this tape will be very effective at producing snow despite the lack of moisture to work with. Tomorrow, 1 to 2 inches of dry and powder snow will be possible, especially along the Oklahoma line.

A few persistent snow showers hang around and keep the clouds in place for Monday.

The grip of Arctic air fades by midweek, and temperatures jump into the 30s briefly on Wednesday. This will be a brief respite, as another polar front arrives on Thursday and highs drop into the 20s.

With all this extreme cold, be sure to remember the 3 C’s: people, pets, and plants. Check who is most vulnerable to the cold, keep your pets indoors, and also remember to drip your faucets to prevent pipes from freezing and bursting!
