These are the best weather apps for iPhone

Apple’s Weather app is having a tough week, facing multiple outages of more than 12 hours each. If you’re looking for a more reliable alternative, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite weather apps for iPhone and iPad…

Apple Weather: Good but unreliable app?

Since Apple acquired Dark Sky in 2020, it has implemented a number of Dark Sky features into its stock Weather app on the iPhone (and now iPad and Mac). Thanks to these improvements, Apple’s first-party weather app is now more powerful and useful with a number of great features.

The weather app features a modular design that adjusts dynamically based on current weather conditions in your area. There are also detailed maps of things like precipitation and temperature. Similar to Dark Sky, Apple has also added support for real-time notifications to its weather app. This means you can get hyper-local notifications about rainfall in your area, including when it starts and ends.

With this year’s software updates, the Weather app is now also available on iPad and Mac, with many of these same features. Unfortunately, the app has not been reliable at all, especially over the past week…

Carrot Weather mini-games and more

You can’t have a weather app roundup without mentioning Carrot Weather. This is easily one of the most impressive and customizable weather apps for iPhone. You can choose from a number of different data sources, and even link Carrot Weather to your weather station if you wish:

Premium Club members can also use Dark Sky, AccuWeather, ClimaCell, MeteoGroup, or AerisWeather as alternative data sources. Region-specific resources are also available: Environment Canada in Canada and WillyWeather in Australia.

Subscribers can also link data taken from personal weather stations directly in their backyard. WeatherFlow/Tempest and Netatmo stations are supported directly, while any station connected to PWSweather can be viewed in CARROT as well.

Carrot Weather app update for iOS 16

Carrot Weather has all the functionality you’d expect from a weather app, and much more. The layout of the app is fully customizable, there are detailed maps of different types of data, you can see long-term forecast data, and much more.

One of my favorite things about Carrot Weather is the home screen and lock screen widgets. There are an endless number of different options, and you can even change widget designs based on weather conditions and forecast updates. There’s also deep integration with Live Activities on the Lock Screen and in Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro.

Carrot Weather is known for its charismatic personality, adding a fun twist to current forecasts and conditions. But if that’s not something that interests you, you can easily disable it and get boring and characterless descriptions as well.

You can download the Carrot Weather app from the App Store. If you’re looking for a Dark Sky alternative and don’t find the built-in Apple Weather app powerful enough, Carrot Weather can probably fill that void quite easily.

Additionally, for a limited time, new users who have Dark Sky installed on their iPhones will be given a chance A special one-time discount of 25% on Premium Ultra During setup – $29.99 per year (with 7-day free trial) instead of $39.99 per year.

Accuweather

AccuWeather is a household name in the weather space, and there’s a reason it’s usually at the top of the App Store charts. The AccuWeather app delivers a great experience across iPhone and iPad, with design customization options, real-time alerts, in-depth forecast information, and more.

One of the most useful parts of the AccuWeather app is its advanced weather radar features. This allows you to view long-term data through radar views of water vapor, precipitation, sustained winds, and even storm surges. Other features of AccuWeather include:

  • Live weather forecast – including MinuteCast forecast for minute-by-minute precipitation updates
  • Local weather – including severe weather alerts, temperature, precipitation, and allergy forecasts for your day
  • WinterCast: Winter weather forecast – giving you advanced warnings about potential snowfall and accumulation
  • Daily forecast – includes precipitation probability, cloud cover, wind, live radar, air quality index, snowfall, and even UV index

Weather sector

Weather Strip is an app for iPhone, iPad and Mac with a unique feel. The app is best known for its hourly, week-long display, which “shows you the full forecast at a glance, so you can pick the best times to get out more quickly.” The app also provides very useful home screen and lock screen widgets based on this data.

Use the interactive map to see the forecast for any location in the world – including mountains, trails, lakes and anywhere you mark.

Extreme weather warnings are displayed live on the forecast timeline, so you can know exactly when to expect danger — including storms, fires, hurricanes, floods, landslides, and everything else NOAA meteorologists track.

You can try Weather Strip free for two weeks, after which you can subscribe with an in-app purchase. Download it on the App Store.
