UPDATED: A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Arlington

Storms approaching at 4:30 p.m

(Updated at 4:40 p.m.) All of Arlington is now under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning.

More such warnings are likely to appear as a line of strong storms approaches from the west. Meteorologists say the storms are accompanied by extremely strong winds, potentially causing damage and power outages.

*Severe thunderstorm warning…

*Until 4:30 PM EST.

* At 409 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm occurred over Herndon, moving east at 30 mph.

Danger… Wind gusts of 60 mph and quarter-sized hail.

Source…Radar indicated.

Impact…Damaging winds will cause some large trees and branches to fall. This could result in injury to people outside, as well as damage to homes and vehicles. Roads may become blocked by fallen trees. Local power outages may occur. Unsecured light objects may become projectiles.

* Affected locations include… Arlington, Bethesda, Reston, South Riding, Herndon, Vienna, Falls Church, Broadlands, Louise Island, Brambleton, Bemet Hills, McLean, American Legion Bridge, Dulles International Airport, Potomac, Ashburn, Oakton, Sterling, Chantilly . And Tysons Corner.

The National Weather Service has issued a watch for Arlington, DC and surrounding areas. It is in effect Saturday afternoon until 9 p.m

Hail, damaging wind gusts and frequent lightning are possible, while an isolated tornado “cannot be ruled out,” according to the National Weather Service.

The watch comes after a series of storms Friday evening, although none of them caused significant damage in Arlington.
