NEWARK, NJ – Say “There’s no snow, Newark.”

Significant changes to this week’s winter storm forecast in New Jersey now include forecasts for widespread heavy snowfall, coastal flooding and high winds capable of causing power outages, forecasters say.

The National Weather Service said 8 to 12 inches of snow was likely in North Jersey and 1 to 3 inches in Central Jersey during Tuesday’s overnight storm. Read more: Snow likely as winter storm targets New Jersey

A hazardous weather forecast and winter storm watch is in effect for the Newark area through Tuesday afternoon.

The Newark Department of Public Safety reminds drivers to watch where they park and follow “No Parking on Snowy Roads” signs if snow begins to fall.

Have some shoveling to do? “All residents are reminded that dumping snow on the street is against the law,” Newark authorities say.

Authorities said local residents should use flashlights instead of candles if there is a power outage. For non-emergency weather related incidents, call: 973-733-6000. For emergencies, call 911.

Local weather forecast for Newark

According to the National Weather Service forecast (as of Monday morning), here’s what to expect in the Newark area this week:

Monday night: Rain after 10pm, mixing with snow after 4am. Low temperature ranges around 32. Wind intensity ranges between 25 and 30. Light east wind becoming northeasterly at 9 to 14 mph in the evening. The probability of rain is 100%. Possibility of new snow accumulation of less than an inch.

Tuesday: Rain and snow, it becomes all snow after 7am. Snow can be heavy at times. The maximum temperature is close to 37. Winds are moderate, speeds between 20 and 30. Northeast winds 16 to 22 mph becoming northwesterly in the afternoon. Wind speeds can reach 32 mph. The probability of rain is 100%. The potential for new snow accumulation ranges from 5 to 9 inches.

Tuesday night: The weather is mostly clear, and the minimum temperature is around 29. The wind speed ranges between 20 and 25. Winds are northwesterly, at a speed of 9 to 11 knots.

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 34. Breezy, with northwest winds 14 to 22 mph, with gusts up to 32 mph.

Wednesday night: Mostly clear, lows around 25.

Thursday: Increasing clouds and altitude approaching 40.

Thursday night: There is a 30 percent chance of snow before 1 a.m. Partly cloudy, low around 33.

Friday: Sunny most of the time, and the high temperature is close to 42.

Friday night: Partly cloudy, and the minimum temperature will be around 29.

Saturday: 30 percent chance of snow. Partly cloudy, with a high around 37.

Saturday night: Partly cloudy, and the minimum temperature will be around 26.

Sunday: Sunny most of the time, and the high temperature is close to forty.
