Himachal Pradesh has been facing cold weather conditions for the past few days, with heavy snowfall in the region leading to the closure of as many as 475 roads, including five national highways.

Snowfall was late this season, but as snow fell in Himachal region, it disrupted about 333 electricity supply systems and 57 water systems, according to the state disaster management authority.

In the state capital Shimla, a temperature of 4.6 degrees Celsius was reported at 7:00 am, with the maximum and minimum temperatures hovering around 12 and -1 degrees Celsius respectively. The state witnessed maximum temperatures below normal with the lowest temperature recorded at -4.9 degrees Celsius in Kokumsiri district. The Indian Meteorological Department forecast snowfall on high hills until tomorrow and rain on low hills today.

Recently released SDMA data revealed that 56 roads in Chamba, 1 in Kangra, 6 in Kinnaur, 51 in Mandi and 133 roads in Shimla were closed due to snowfall. While on Saturday, as many as 504 roads were closed, including 4 national highways. Moreover, citizens face the problem of power and water outages in the state due to snowfall. Water taps began to dry up due to bad weather, which led to the freezing of pipelines.

Moreover, state authorities are leading snow removal operations at nine stations in Lahaul-Spiti after the upper reaches of the district witnessed fresh snowfall.

Lahaul Spiti Police took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and gave weather and road conditions in the area for Saturday. Police later on February 4 also issued an avalanche warning.

The nine stations, including Keelung, Kaza, Sumdu, Udaipur, Tandi, Koksar, Sisu, North Portal and South Portal, reported depths of between 1 and 16 feet of snow. Heavy snowfall this season has attracted a large number of tourists to the hilly state of Himachal Pradesh.

Himachal Pradesh Police also issued an advisory to the general public to assess weather conditions before embarking on trekking and advised to travel only when necessary.

Earlier on February 2, more than 566 roads were reported to be closed in various districts of Himachal Pradesh, including nearly six national highways, due to heavy snowfall. Meanwhile, about 700 electricity supply systems in the state were disrupted.
