Weekend weather “packs a punch” as thunderstorms and a heat wave continue to hit the metropolitan area

7News chief meteorologist Veronica Johnson said it was possible “some high winds could delay some Friday night football games”.
“These storms could bring more hail and damaging winds,” Johnson said.
Area residents should be aware of road closures and weather signs from officials, as well as watch weather warnings for severe storms.
7News First Alert meteorologist Brian Van de Graaf recommends running weather notifications for lightning first alert and/or severe alerts at your location so you can seek shelter in case of inclement weather.
It will be a wet weekend, he said, though it won’t be hot. Van de Graaf said temperatures on Saturday will be in the high 80s, but “it will feel like 90 degrees.” On Sunday, temperatures are expected to reach the mid-80s with the possibility of rain and storms.

Thursday marked the fifth day of a historic heatwave in September, but highs across the region were a degree or two lower than the hot days earlier this week, said Eileen Whelan, meteorologist for 7News First Alert.
Daily record highs were broken at all three D.C. area airports on Wednesday.
The temperature at Dulles International Airport reached 100 degrees — For the first time ever in September It has reached triple digits since the National Weather Service began recording temperatures at the airport in the 1960s.
Temperatures at BWI Marshall and Reagan National Airports broke the daily record by tying at 98 degrees.
