Southwest Riverside County is expected to see its first fall rains this week.

MURRITA, Calif. — The first fall rain showers of the season could hit Murrieta Wednesday into Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

“We are monitoring the incoming low pressure system currently developing northward off the Pacific Northwest coast,” a statement from the NWS said. “This low will slowly move south and east through most of this week, ultimately bringing cooler and wetter conditions to Southern California.”

The storm is not expected to become severe until Friday afternoon or evening, with only scattered light rain falling in the area on Wednesday and Thursday, forecasters said.

“Count in at least some measurable rain on Wednesday and Thursday nights,” the Meteorological Service said. “Think sprinkles down to a quarter of an inch. Mountains are expected to see accumulations at the upper end of that range.”

The agency indicated that successive troughs were crossing the area over the course of the three days. However, meteorologists expect the bulk of the moisture will remain off the Southern California coast through Friday.

“The highest (possibility) for heavy rainfall rates is late Friday in most locations,” the Met Office said. “So that period holds the greatest potential for any runoff or significant flood threat.”

The storm system should move out to the east on Saturday. A series of high pressure will follow through Thanksgiving week, with generally warmer and drier conditions, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures in the Riverside metropolitan area on Monday and Tuesday will reach the high 80s during the day and low 50s overnight. Wednesday into Saturday will see a slight cooling trend, with daytime highs peaking in the low 70s and lows in the 50s.
