Winter weather warning for northeastern Minnesota

It’s time to dust off the winter weather terminology.

A winter weather advisory is in place overnight until 9 a.m. Wednesday for much of northeastern Minnesota, including the North Shore.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s high-resolution Rapid Update model shows the system producing snow across northeastern Minnesota overnight. The forecast model loop below runs between 8pm on Tuesday and 7am on Wednesday.

A few inches of wet snow will fall overnight, especially in the higher terrain above the North Shore.

*When…until 9 a.m. CST Wednesday.

* Impacts…plan for slippery road conditions. Dangerous
Conditions can affect morning or evening commuting.

* Additional details… Snow accumulations range from 3 to 5 inches
Most likely along and east of the Gunflint Trail.

Precautionary/preparedness measures…

Slow down and be careful while traveling.

inches, especially at higher elevations along the North Shore.

* Impacts…plan for slippery road conditions. Dangerous
Conditions can affect morning or evening commuting.

*Additional details… Areas directly near Lake Superior
Watch periods of rain mixing with snow. Expect less snow
Accumulations near Lake Superior are 3 inches or less. some
Light ice accumulation will also be possible tonight.

Overnight temperatures will be a few degrees either side of freezing in the north. Expect roads to range from wet to icy in areas.

It’s a preview of the attractions coming next week. I’m not making any judgments about whether that’s good or bad for us in mid-November. It’s unseasonably warm.
